Exploring Roles in the ECE Community: Local and State Levels

The local or state organizations or communities of practice I chose are the Mississippi Early Childhood Education Association, Mississippi State University Early Childhood Institute and The State Early Childhood Council. I choose each of the organization because they support the vision that I have for the early childhood. These groups recognized the importance of providing children with the best quality education early in life. In addition, each organization understands that there are many factors that create barriers that prevent families from taking advantage of early childhood service however the above organization are working to alleviate any reason that families will not take advantage of services provided  to children of early childhood ages.

  1. Dear Kvonya,

I think you chose some very worthwhile organizations. I grew up in Orange Grove, Mississippi; which is now part of Gulfport. It is interesting to see that they have early childhood organizations because I have always wanted to move back. Another thing I find interesting about your post is the requirements for the positions that you found.I suppose it should not be surprising that time management is a requirement. It should be in all teaching positions. I found the social perceptions requirement a bit odd. Yet, it is necessary isn't it? Early childhood educators need to be aware of different perceptions in order to communicate effectively with families, children, community resources, and coworkers. It is wonderful that these organizations recognize this as an important skill. Thank you for your post. It was enlightening.

  3. Kvonya,

I am a native of Mississippi. I grew up on the Gulf Coast (Pass Christian) and I am ecstatic that you have chosen such worthy organizations in the state of Mississippi! I currently live in Augusta, GA but I will always be a Mississippi girl and I intend to move back to the state that has given me so much. Are you familiar with Mississippi Building Blocks?(http://www.msbuildingblocks.com/mx/hm.asp?id=home) I think this is a fantastic organization that focuses on the overall well-being of young children in the state. I also think that this organization requires skills and experience very similar to that of the PreSchool/Head Start Teacher!

  4. I'm very familiar with your part of Mississippi too. From my days living in New Orleans, we enjoyed going over to Gulfport. Good luck as you pursue a career with Head Start.
